Making a Difference

As we've entered the Third Millennium, Delta V is committed to accelerating society into acknowledging the basic civil rights of everyone, regardless of sexual orientation. The only way, short of revolution, to accomplish this is a widespread, grass-roots education campaign. With at least ten per cent of the population, gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals everywhere can and should be a powerful, driving voice of reason to eliminate ignorance and discrimination. We can do this both as individuals and as organizations.

One simple, painless way to educate the public at large is to provide books and magazines in public, private, and school libraries. Our goal is to increase the visibility of GLBT issues by providing books and magazines to libraries which through ignorance or lack of funds are deficient when it comes to gay and lesbian literature and resources.

Things to Do*

Support the American Library Association Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

Become a member of the Freedom to Read Foundation.

Discuss the censorship of gay and lesbian books with the local public librarian.

Make suggestions to the librarian about which gay and lesbian books and magazines you would like the library to stock.

Local gay and lesbian organizations and individuals should constantly pressure the public libraries.

If their requests go unheeded, then they must complain to politicians and local officials.

Donate your used (in good condition) gay and lesbian books to your local library.

If you suspect that the librarian is the censor, report him or her to the Freedom to Read Foundation.

If you have access to a college library, take advantage of its gay and lesbian resources.

If you find your college library to be lacking in gay and lesbian material, complain to the librarian and the academic dean.
