The Jerusalem AIDS Project (JAIP) - develops and conducts community
and school-based HIV/AIDS education programs, with emphasis on the youth
and health professionals. The Jerusalem AIDS Project (JAIP), is an Israeli
and international NGO, which has been involved up to date in implementing
35 major community-based AIDS educational interventions in 30 countries in
Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. All through contracts
with WHO, PAHO, National Ministries of Health and Education and National
NGO's. JAIP board is governed by professionals from various fields (Medicine,
Public Health, Education, Nursing, Social Sciences) and people with
HIV/AIDS.
In Israel since its inception in 1987, JAIP has specialized in school-based
education. Two AIDS education curricula have been developed for elementary
and high schools and endorsed by the Ministry of Education for use in schools.
It has also initiated peer AIDS education program where medical students
(in 2nd and 3rd year of training) are trained as AIDS educators in schools
and the community at large. The programs produced by JAIP are designed for
teaching in the class room and other youth settings. It makes use of
self-contained and self-explanatory AIDS Educational Kits, which are based
on the Immune System Approach (ISYAP) Model.
The Jerusalem AIDS Project also conducts AIDS education training (5-days,
40 hours) workshops for teachers, physicians and nurses. So far 3,700 educational
and health professionals in Israel and 3,550 in other countries have been
trained as AIDS educators by JAIP since 1987. In 1996 a unique Peer AIDS
Education Project (HALEV) was established in cooperation with the Jerusalem
Municipality, and in 1998 JAIP has initiated for the first time in the country
an out-reach program for sex-workers. JAIP has also developed the 100 minutes
HIV/AIDS talk provided by medical officers in the Israeli Defense Force,
to all recruits.
