FTM International represents a diverse group of transgendered men: "We come from different backgrounds, include every imaginable sexual orientation, and are multi-cultural. We range in age from our teens to our 70's, and include persons who are just beginning to examine these issues, as well as persons who have been dealing with them for many years. We are at various points along the transgender/transsexual continuum. Some of us have entered transition, beginning with self-exploration with peers or with counselors. Many of us take hormones to produce secondary sex characteristics such as male hair growth or have surgery… Others, while having a male gender identity, [have decided that/believe] hormones and surgery are not necessary for them to actualize their masculinity. Some express their male identity exclusively th lines of boy-dykefag, etc. Many find the FTM group to be a supportive environment. FTMI holds meetings in the San Francisco Bay Area, helps organize an annual conference, and publishes/distributes the largest ftm publication in the world with their newsletter. They also sell a and resource guide. Membership in FTMI includes newsletter subscription, voting rights, and publication discounts.
